ARC has one operational landfill cell – Cell 7. This landfill cell has been designed, engineered and constructed in accordance with the best industry practice. This includes a base and wall lining system which prevents the leaching of contamination and waste into the underlying soil and groundwater. The design and construction of each stage of the landfill cell is subject to verification by an independent EPA Victoria appointed environmental auditor and EPA Victoria. This includes independent construction quality assurance and testing.

The operational landfill cell is operating at a reduced capacity whilst the site clean up and remediation works are being completed. ARC is receiving small quantities of commercial waste soil for use at the cell base and walls. This type of material is required in order to protect the lining system and ensure appropriate function of the landfill cell into the future.

The landfill cell will provide waste producers with a safe disposal point for a range of wastes which currently have limited reuse and recovery potential including:

  • Packaged waste asbestos

  • Soil containing asbestos

  • Lower-level contaminated soils (Category D & Category C Reportable Priority Waste soil) including PFAS impacted soils

 

The landfill cell design includes a view to the future and incorporates the requirements for capping and rehabilitation. These works will tie into the broader rehabilitation works which are currently progressing at the Site.
